Late in 2005, a small group of athletes and coaches from multiple disciplines met together to create the Sarasota Sharks Tri Club. Until then, most athletes in the surrounding areas were isolated and training in small groups or even alone with little or no means of communication. Our goal was to bring these athletes together in a way that would be cost effective, educational, socially welcoming and most importantly...FUN!
Originally created under the umbrella of the Sarasota Family YMCA from 2005-2009, the efforts of our club have been responsible for raising over $50,000 to benefit local YMCA programs and projects. We've also founded and committeed the first ever Olympic Distance triathlon (the Sharks Classic) in the Sarasota area. Unfortunately, we were extremely limited in our ability to develop as a triathlon club within our existing structure. In June 2009, to maintain our original goals for our multisport community, our club voted to separate from the Sarasota Family YMCA. In order to define our disassociation, we also chose to change our name. Beginning 2010, our club will be operating as a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization.
